OSHIMILI (A POEM)

|OSHIMILI|

painting by Roger Brown, 2012

It was my ambition that carried me away from the place I called home

It was my ambition that made me want eat and drink the food of ndị mmụọ <the spirits>

It was my ambition that carried me through thick and thin in the forest of Akwete

It was my ambition that brought me to the bank of the great river, Oshimili

Oshimili, Oshimili

Oshimili, that beautiful river I came across at sunset

Vast as the sky, gleaming the golden sun

She was nothing, like I had seen before

Thirsty for love, I gave her myself

And with the tender kisses of her lips, she removed my distress

I told her my name, the Okwute I came to find

I told her it was everything a man could dream

So she threw the winds and swept me away

And in her fiery depths, I found myself
